Lyda | Colorado Senior Photography

This is my amazing cousin, Lyda! Over the summer, we were both visiting Chicago at the same time, so we planned a senior portrait session. We started at my aunt’s house north of the city and then went to the Illinois State Park nearby. The setting was a huge change from my normal Colorado senior photography. Everything was lush and green. The sunset was gorgeous, reflecting off all the water. And I forgot to bring bug spray so we got eaten alive by mosquitos. I don’t usually have to worry too much about those in the Rockies!

I loved photographing in the fields and forests of northern Illinois, but I do think I would get tired of all the green if I did all my sessions there. I am so grateful to live in a state with so much variety. And, of course, I have a special place in my heart for urban senior and headshot sessions! All the colors and textures of downtown Denver make for some amazing backdrops for portraits.

Lyda is my uncle by marriage’s niece from Ohio. We didn’t grow up together but I have many fond memories of her and her younger siblings spending the Fourth of July with us at my aunt and uncle’s place. There weren’t enough bedrooms for everyone so all the kids would sleep in tents by the lake after we watched the fireworks show and lit some of our own. I remember making jewelry with Lyda and her trying to guess how old I was. Haha!

Now she’s a high school senior in Ohio and will be heading off to college soon. She got a soccer scholarship to Miami University, so we had to take some portraits of her in her soccer uniform! I don’t think anyone in our family has ever gotten a sports scholarship before. I’m so impressed by all her talent and hard work! Congrats Lyda and have a wonderful senior year!

Austin | Denver Senior Photography

I met Austin at the Denver Nature and Science Museum as part of a senior portrait event for New Legacy High School. New Legacy High School is a Denver charter school for young parents. It’s half high school and half early learning center so the students and their children can learn at the same time. When I saw the opportunity to volunteer to photograph senior portraits for these students, I went for it. It was a great opportunity to dip my toes in the Denver senior photography world, while giving back at the same time.

Austin and his girlfriend both attended New Legacy High School. His girlfriend graduated a year before him. Their daughter is five-years-old; such a fun age! The school leader, at the event could not stop bragging about how smart Austin is and what a good student he’s been. She kept saying he was their most motivated student. And after talking to him, it was clear to me that he loves school. He’s really passionate about science and could not wait to come back to the museum with his daughter.

We had a great session together! Austin loved the nature that City Park had to offer and really wanted water in some of the photos. I love that we were able to capture so many sides to his personality. My favorite shot of him is the one where he’s sitting by the water, having a quiet moment to himself. At the end of the session, we made sure to get some photos of him and his girlfriend together.

I’m so glad I participated in this event. I approached senior portraits similarly to my headshot sessions. For me, it’s all about creating a fun and relaxed experience and bringing out my client’s personality. I love senior photography and I cannot wait to do more!

Layla | Denver Senior Photography

Layla and I met at the Denver Nature and Science Museum as part of a senior portrait event with New Legacy High School. New Legacy High School is a Denver charter school for young parents. When I saw the opportunity to volunteer to photograph senior portraits for these students, I went for it. Layla was the first of 3 students I photographed. She’s hoping to go to college at Colorado State University and study in the field of medicine. She has a daughter, who she describes as spoiled rotten. It’s hard not to spoil a cute little kid, right?

We had a lot of fun at our session! We went all over City Park and the Nature and Science Museum. There are some great, modern areas at the back of the museum that are nice and quiet. And with City Park right there, we had the perfect mix of nature and urban.

I’m so glad I participated in this event. I approached senior portraits similarly to my headshot sessions. For me, it’s all about creating a fun and relaxed experience and bringing out my client’s personality. I love senior photography and I cannot wait to do more!
