Author Mary W | Boulder Headshot Photography

Mary came to Boulder all the way from Brisbane, Australia for a writing workshop with the wonderful Megan Walrod, who’s headshots I did last year. Mary is a professional coach and counsellor, speaker trainer, and a Mom to two boys. She is also writing a book about communication differences between generations.

While she was in town, making some writing breakthroughs on her book, she decided to get some Boulder headshot photography so she would have a great author photo. She was very nervous to be in front of the camera but after talking her through posing and helping her to feel grounded and present, she ended up loving the photos and the experience! Here’s what she had to say about getting her headshots done:

My dear, you are exceptional!!! I firmly believe that the reason those photos are soooo good, is because you are so lovely to work with – I’ve never felt so much at ease with a photographer!
Thank you enormously – you have made me feel more beautiful than anyone has ever managed to in my entire life.

We did her session at a beautiful private property in North Boulder. Mary wanted both indoor and outdoor photos so we did a mix of both. This property even had a library, that made for a great background for some of the photos. I love the one of her curled up with a mug too!

My goal with Denver and Boulder headshot photography is always to help people feel comfortable, relaxed, and like themselves in front of the camera. And it always translates to better portraits! When you feel at ease during a photo session, you will like the photos better. And your clients will like them better as well, since they’ll be able to really see you for who you are.

Opera Colorado Portraits | Denver Portrait Photography

I am so, so glad I got to take these awesome group portraits of Opera Colorado‘s Young Artists last season. These Denver portraits were bright, fun, and colorful. Right up my alley! We did the portrait photography right before their Opera Colorado debut at the Young Artist Showcase.

It was the perfect day to take photos too. The light was just gorgeous! Allison Nicholas (soprano), Danielle Lombardi (mezzo-soprano), Omar Najmi (tenor), Ryan Bradford (baritone), Charles Eaton (baritone), and Nathan Van Arsdale (bass baritone) rocked this session and made it so much fun! I got to take Danielle and Omar’s headshots later in the season too!

For this session, we went with a bright, jewel tone color scheme, which I loved! The Young Artists did a great job coordinating their outfits without being too matchy. We did two looks. The first was a casual look, outdoors, with the Denver Theater District as the background. Then we went inside, for a more formal look, with the gorgeous Ellie Caulkins Opera House as the backdrop. We got some champagne glasses and cocktail tables to complete the look!

Professional group portraits can help your cast or company feel more relatable and boost your sales. These images are great to use on websites and social media and work perfectly to advertise an event you don’t have imagery for yet. Opera Colorado used these group portraits to advertise upcoming performances and to attract the next group of awesome Young Artists. Why wouldn’t you want to work here!? We were also able to squeeze in some photos of smaller groups to advertise shows where just a few of the artists performed.

Opera Singer Brett | Denver Headshot Photography

I met Brett when he was a Young Artist, during my first season with Opera Colorado. Brett Sprague is a tenor from Tacoma, Washington. He played Tamino in the Student Matinee of Mozart’s The Magic Flute. You can see the production photos from that show here. More recently, he played Arturo in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor at Opera Colorado as well as other role’s across the country. Check out his full bio and website (with more photos) here.

For the past few seasons, he has been the Assistant Director of the Young Artist Program at Opera Colorado. He is always full of great ideas and has been a great mentor to the new Young Artists. He and Cherity, the Director of the Young Artist Program, make such a great team!

The two of them decided to book their headshot sessions together. It is such a great idea to book with a friend or coworker. You can encourage each other and help each other feel more comfortable. I switch off between the two of you, which gives you a few nice breaks from smiling so much. And we can do some fun photos of the two of you together! Plus, you can take advantage of a discount for booking back to back.

We did this session at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. I love this location for it’s clean, urban look. It is a cultural center of the city, making it a great backdrop for any kind of artist. We also got to go in the Ellie Caulkins Opera House and use the theater for a few photos. These made for some really classy headshots at the end of our session.

Why to Hire a Professional | Denver Boulder Headshot Photography

First off, if your friend or a local students wants to photograph you and you’re up for it, then definitely go for it. Model for them, have some fun, be their muse. But if you need photos for auditions, promotions, your website or whatever, it’s always best to hire a professional. Here are 5 reasons why:

1. You’re in charge, not them

When you seek out a photographer and hire them, you are the client, and you are in charge. This doesn’t mean that you get to make all the rules. A professional photographer knows what they’re doing and you should listen to their advice. But, as the client, you get to customize the experience. If you need a photo of a certain person at an event, want a colorful wall as the background of a headshot, or have another specific idea for your session, your photographer can make it happen. Within reason, they’re job is to serve you and make sure you’re happy.

A great example of this is model sessions. Most photographers do model sessions when they wanna play with the camera or have a really cool idea. While client sessions are about bringing the client’s vision to life, model sessions are about the photographer’s vision. This is what you’ll get when you hire a friend. It’ll be fun, but it might not be what you really want.

2. Money talks

No one wants to admit it, but money does talk. My paid sessions always come before my non-profit work, model sessions, and my personal work. This means they get priority booking, faster delivery, and more attention to detail. I run a business and I can’t pay for my cameras or groceries with exposure or experience. Money really can be that extra little push that makes someone put in more effort. It shows us that we are literally valued and worth it to our clients.

3. Insurance

A very practical reason to hire a professional is insurance. Professional photographers, like myself, have all kinds of insurance. Liability insurance keeps the photographer and the client safe. If you get hurt at a session, liability insurance can cover the cost of medical care and damages.

Professional photographers have all sorts of fail safes put in place to protect the client. Birth photographers have back up photographers. Wedding photographers have second shooters. Portrait photographers have back up cameras and assistants. All professionals have contracts and insurance.

4. Experience matters

Professional photographers have of experience and education under their belts. This makes a big difference. Photography isn’t just a gift that some people are born with. No one pops out of the womb a Pulitzer Prize winner. Talent is part of it sure but experience is most of it. Also, actually taking pictures is barely a quarter of our time as professionals. WE have to know how to edit, how to communicate with clients. We have to set up policies and systems for client management, bookkeeping, paying taxes, everything it takes to run a business. And most importantly for you, we have to know how make our clients feel comfortable and beautiful. This also takes time, education, and experience.

5. No hard feelings

If the shoot doesn’t go wonderfully or you end up not loving the photos, a friend might take your feedback personally. With a professional, you never have to worry about hurting anyone’s feelings or ruining a relationship. Professionals know how to handle criticism and use it to improve their business. You might just gain a new friend instead of lose an old one.

Opera Singer Danielle | Denver Headshot Photography

Danielle is a mezzo-soprano in the Young Artist program at Opera Colorado. This is her second season with the company. I get to work with the Young Artists a lot throughout the season but I don’t always have the chance to get to know them. That’s why I love headshot photography so much. I get to spend time with awesome people, like Danielle, one on one.

We did Danielle’s portrait session at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. This is a great location for performing artists. It has an aspirational element to it, it provides a range of backgrounds, and if the weather isn’t great, we can stay under the glass dome!

Park Hill Dancer Portraits | Denver Dance Photography

Today is Dance Teachers Appreciation Day! I wanted to do a spotlight on a dance studio and a dance teacher I love: Park Hill Dance Academy! Last year, I photographed Park Hill Dance Collective. Here are the awesome dance portraits from that session.

More recently, I took portraits of all of the older students at Park Hill Dance Academy. It was a chilly day, but they were all such troopers and their portraits turned out wonderfully!

Author Mary D | Boulder Headshot Photographer

By far, my favorite part of being a Boulder headshot photographer is showing people that they really can look good in photos. I so often get clients who say they never like any photos of themselves. Mary was one of those clients. This was her reaction to seeing the final, edited photos.

What can I say!  I literally said very loud, OMG, when I looked at the three, especially the first one.  I’m speechless.  You did a beautiful job.  Thank you so very, very much.

Thank you for putting them in black and white also.  I never thought of that though it could come in handy to have B&W. Some of the ones I didn’t care for in color I really like in B&W.

In every way possible, you’ve been a total delight to work with.

Mary is an author and is working on a new book. She was such a joy to photograph. We met on the day of her session and chatted the whole time. We walked through Chautauqua Park together, taking portraits along the way. Then, we drove to a nearby garden and found some lovely spots to take a few more photos before the sun set.
