Vanessa, A, and Baby V’s Storytelling Session | Broomfield Family Photographer

I’ve been working with Vanessa for over a year now and I even photographed her daughter’s beautiful birth story! I was so excited when she asked me to document her and her kids last month. The plan was to come over when everyone was waking up from their naps and capture all the post-nap snuggles, but then A stopped napping so we had to think of a new idea. Instead we opted for a morning session after everyone woke up. When I got there, A was in his PJs and everyone else was getting over a cold. (Including me. ‘Tis the season!) We captured story-time, snuggles, a little bit of chaos, and lots of playtime!

What I’m Grateful For | Chicago Family Photographer

Every Thanksgiving, my family writes down what we’re grateful for in our little Thanksgiving journal. This year, I thought I’d make my page a little more public and share what I’m grateful for on my blog. I’m writing about 5 things I’m grateful for this year, in no particular order and sharing photos from last year’s Thanksgiving.

JamieKraus_Thanksgivikkah2014_04w

My Privilege: Over the past few years, I’ve learned what privilege really means, and along the way, I’ve realized just how much of it I have. While it is very important to be aware of the privilege you have and use it to help those without, I think it’s also important to be grateful for it. I owe so much of my success and ease of life to my many privileges, and for that, I am grateful.

JamieKraus_Thanksgivikkah2014_05.5w

Facebook: What a cliche millennial thing to be grateful for, right? Let me explain. Facebook has not only allowed me to keep in touch with friends and family that I moved far away from, it helps me stay up to date with current events, have intellectual discussions, and broaden my worldview, it has been a key networking tool as I become a small business owner in a new place, and it has provided me with a support group as I continue my journey into adulthood. Facebook has gotten me gigs and jobs, it has helped my business grow and it has helped me grow with it.

JamieKraus_Thanksgivikkah2014_08w

My Girlfriend: Morgan and I have been together for 4 years, but this past year has been a true test. It’s the first year we’ve officially lived together, had to figure out finances together, been away from our friends and family together, and the first year of my business. She has been incredibly supportive of it all. And despite my lack of kitchen cleaning, living together has been pretty amazing.

JamieKraus_Thanksgivikkah2014_10w

My Family: It’s not easy to find a family that will be supportive of two freelance artists from across the country, but my brother and I just ended up with one. Our parents, and the rest of our family, have always encouraged us to pursue our dreams, rather than a paycheck. But they also taught us how to be smart about it, so that we wouldn’t have to live in their basement. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that! If I lived in Chicago, that’s probably where I’d be.)

JamieKraus_Thanksgivikkah2014_13w

My Brother: My brother has always been a bit of a nomad. When we go to coffee shops together to have a work day, he can’t stay in the same place for more than a couple hours. I’m not sure he’s lived anywhere for more than a year post-college. Being this far away from home isn’t easy, and I’m so glad that I have him nearby, at least for now.

Baby V’s Birth Story | Colorado Newborn Photographer

I have been working with this amazing mother as a second photographer for about a year now, so when I asked if I could join her in the delivery room with my camera, she already trusted me and my work. Photographing a birth was an incredible experience. I have photographed in hospitals and ORs before but I’d never been a part of a birth aside from my own (which I don’t remember much of :P).

I’m not sure births ever go according to plan. Mama V wasn’t planning on having a natural birth, but that’s what ended up happening and she rocked it! Baby V was out in minutes, so fast that I almost missed it! She was born at 7:11am happy, healthy, and with a full head of hair. It was very empowering to see someone work through so much to bring a new life into this world.

I loved seeing the family’s reactions to their newest addition. Baby V’s brother was hesitant at first, but soon warmed right up to her. Next month, I’ll be photographing this wonderful family again for a post-nap time session. I can’t wait to show you those photos too!

Mason Family in RiNo | Denver Family Photographer

Remember way back when, when I shared some family Denver photos of the Mason’s pregnancy announcement? Well, they had their beautiful baby a couple weeks ago, so I thought I’d share the photos we took while wandering around the RiNo Arts District in May. We had a blast exploring the neighborhood during First Friday. M loved all the murals and wanted to be on her daddy’s shoulders the whole time.

Meet Baby N | Documentary Family Photography

For over two decades, I have been the baby of my family, but in late December, that all changed. At our family reunion, I got to meet my new baby cousin, little baby N.

In addition to documenting the whole reunion, I spent some time focusing on the newest addition to the family. I got some cute photos of baby N smiling and laughing but the ones I love the most are the ones with her parents. Storytelling photography is all about the connections between people (and animals!). Capturing a parent’s love for their child is pretty magical.

N’s parents ordered some metal prints of her to hang in the new home they’re building. Metal prints are my favorite! They are modern, they work with any decor or style, and they are super durable (plus, fully recyclable).

Lattice’s Story | Broomfield Pet Photographer

I first met Lattice and his parents about a year ago. Lattice was one of our first (and still one of our favorite) dog sitting guests. He loves attention and being close to his humans. He will bury his head in your lap or push himself against any part of you that he can reach, just to be close. He’s sweet, cuddly, playful, and smart, but he can also be stubborn and picky. And he’s afraid of the bathtub.

As a Colorado pet photographer, I love being able to show the connections between people and their pets (or pets and their people)! Here is Lattice’s story, from an evening with his humans.

Fourth of July Reunion | Documentary Family Photographer

I don’t have any first cousins, except for the furry ones of course, and I don’t get to see my second cousins very often since they live on the east coast. We’ve only had three reunions, but they are always beyond awesome. This time there was a lot to catch up on and celebrate. There was a wedding and a baby, many years of college past, new careers and relationships begun.

We all met up in Ohio for the Fourth of July weekend. We stayed at this awesome old house with the sweetest inkeeper ever. She decorated for us, did our hair, and even made all 18 of us breakfast on the our last morning there.

We didn’t really do a whole lot, just hung out and talked, but we did manage to work in a game of tennis and some ultimate frisbee.

documentary-family-photographer, documentary-family-photography, documentary-family-photos

I don’t think athletics run in our blood. There was a lot more falling and laughing than there was scoring!

documentary-family-photographer, documentary-family-photography, documentary-family-photos

The most exciting part of the trip was meeting the next generation! I’ve always been the youngest in my family so having a brand new cousin was super awesome.

Isn’t she adorable? She might even be cuter than me!

documentary-family-photographer, documentary-family-photography, documentary-family-photos

We pretty much spent the whole weekend drinking and cooking…

…and grilling and baking. We really like food, okay?

My amazing grandmother turned 92 this month!

My grandmother (I call her Ema, which means mother in Hebrew) is an inspiration to me. When she was 16, she left her whole life behind and came to this country to escape Nazi Germany. She knew no English when she got here and still managed to graduate at the top of her class.

She has had such an incredible life and she met her 92nd year with so much joy.

She still has her sense of humor too. After she opened all her presents, she said, “It pays to have birthdays!”

Baby Zeke | Denver Documentary Family Photography

Baby Zeke came into the world on April 12, 2015 and I got to photograph him just four days later! I loved being able to photograph this new family in their natural habitat, their home.

A Mother’s Day Story | Denver Family Photographer

This gorgeous woman is going to be a mother…again!

A couple months ago, I reached out to Jennifer about photographing her family to build my storytelling portfolio and she had an even better idea. It turns out the timing could not have been better because she had just found out she was pregnant with her second child.

Jennifer Mason and I met through a photography networking group and we took each other’s headshots back in January. She is a fantastic birth photographer and she inspired me to photograph my first birth last month. (blog post coming soon!)

The Mason’s were excited to announce their big news in a creative way so we got to work dreaming up ideas. We decided to do a family photography session in Denver and play in the park. M gave her mama some cute presents with the help of dad. She is so excited about becoming a big sister!
