Local Lab 2017 | Boulder Theater Photography

Local Theater Company, in Boulder, puts on an incredible new-works festival each year called Local Lab. On Saturday of this year’s festival, they had a mainstage reading of Shostakovich, or Silence by Jason Grote and directed by Pesha Rudnick at the Dairy Arts Center. After the reading, the writer and director had a talk back with the audience, followed by an after party with food and an awesome DJ. The talk back was really constructive and Jason and Pesha revealed how the show all came together at the last minute.

The party was a lot of fun, with great food and amazing music by DJ Savior Breath. Everyone was in chatting and laughing and discussing the reading. The party spilled out into the lobby and gallery of the Dairy Arts Center. Right as I was leaving, the lights went low and everyone started dancing!

I loved that Local Lab had me come in for the talk back and after party. Since there was no rehearsal for the reading, I would have had to photograph it live, with the audience, which could have been disruptive. This way, I still got photos of the production team speaking on stage and of the ambiance in the room. Plus since the lights were on in the audience, I was able to get photos of the patron engaged and happy.

It’s always good to have a photographer at events like after parties too. These photos are great for drawing crowds to future events, sharing with attendees, and posting on social media sites like facebook. They can also be used in future marketing materials to show happy patrons, crowds, and ambiance.

9/11 Stair Climb | Denver Event Photographer

We all remember where we were on September 11th, 2001. I was still young and I remember my 4th grade teacher telling us to sit on the carpet as one by one, my classmates got picked up by their parents. When my mom picked me up, she told me what happened. I could see the Sears Tower from my house and I was convinced that it would be the next target. I was also convinced that it would fall, from 2 miles away, onto our house. I made an emergency plan to hide under the coffee table in the basement. For years, I was scared every time a plane flew by the building. At that age, I wasn’t quite able to process the loss of life or the sacrifices the first responders and others made that day.

In college, my partner was a volunteer firefighter. Every Friday night, he would be on duty crew, waiting at the station for calls to come in. Even though most of his district was a college campus where the biggest calls were for dumpster fires or alarms because students forgot to put water in their Easy Mac, there was always the slight fear that something worse might happen. That he might not come home that night. That is the reality for so many family members of first responders, especially those in New York City in 2001.

Each year, around the county, firefighters come together on September 11th and converge on the tallest building in their city. In teams, they climb stairs equal to the number of floors in the World Trade Centers. In Denver, they climb 1801 California St, twice, in order to equal the height of the twin towers. Stations from all over the state were represented. Each one wears the name tag of a firefighter who lost their lives at Ground Zero. Some of them represent the same firefighter each year and maintain a relationship with their families.

I photographed the ceremony before the climb and then waited on the stairs for teams to come up. Once some of the teams had finished, I went out to the roof, which has some incredible views of the city. My favorite part of the day was when the news crews on the roof interviewed the first woman to finish the climb. I was so moved by how many women were participating. The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is such an important event and I’m so honored I could be a part of it.

Storycraft | Denver Performing Arts Photography

Storycraft is a live storytelling show produced by Denver Storytellers Project. Think of it as Denver’s own The Moth show. There are four shows a year, hosted at Syntax Physic Opera. Laura Condi, the mastermind behind this project and one of the storytellers, asked me to photograph their debut show, at the beginning of the year. My brother, Josh (you might remember him from our Bird Fur photoshoots), was also one of the storytellers. The other storytellers were Joe Fleenor, Erika Holmes, Andrew Curtis Forlines, AJ Pape, Colleen Leggett.

Denver Storytellers Project’s website summed up the process well.

Modern storytelling has made a name for itself with This American Life, The Moth or Denver’s own The Narrators. It’s hard to describe, but once you see it, you don’t forget it.

Way back in October of 2016, Denver Storytellers Project got started when about 13 writers, performers and storytelling fans gathered to a meet-up in a downtown winery. We wanted to hear each other’s ideas, hopes and goals for starting a new show. A new show where we wanted to do something different, something a little more polished and curated. Most importantly, we talked about what. makes. a. good. story. and what’s the best way to tell those stories to an audience.

Then we got to work.

With an in-depth creative process, 7 stories were selected, workshopped, rehearsed and then performed in front of our first audience on January 19th 2017.

And although Denver Storytellers Project had a nice ring to it, we wanted to put our creative minds together and vote on a name for our show…one that spoke to our collaborative process; taking a story from rough draft to stage ready…

So that’s how Storycraft came to be.

For their future shows, they’ll be stepping it up another notch. Each story will be paired with a multimedia slide show to help bring them to life and connect with the audience on a whole new level.

M & J’s Summer Solstice Wedding | Colorado Couples Photographer

Half a year ago, I met Missy at a women’s networking group in Denver. We sat next to each other and were partnered up for some ice breakers. It turned out she was getting married about a month later, and I was able to photograph her winter solstice wedding in Boulder! Then six months later, I got to capture the next part of their ceremony on the summer solstice.

It was so amazing to see this couple’s wedding ritual come full circle through a six month long journey. For their summer wedding, Missy and Jaice had a few of their closest friends and family members join them in Lyons, where they live. Since they first met over tea, they started their rituals with a traditional Chinese tea ceremony. Missy and Jaice intentionally spilled the tea when they were pouring it, symbolizing that in life, shit happens and you just have to deal with it and keep going. (I might be paraphrasing a bit!) Then they exchanged rings by the river and celebrated with their loved ones.

Food is very central to Missy and Jaice’s lives together. They had an amazing family style meal, using all local ingredients (some picked right from the Lyons Farmette). Everyone shared food, stories, and laughs around the table as the solstice sun began to set behind the mountains. They ending the evening the way all good evenings should end. With music and dancing under the summer night sky.

Choose Your Own Adventure | Colorado Storytelling Photographer

Today is the last day of Chanukah. Last night, I lit the menorah and sang the blessings with my boyfriend and my dad. Then we drove around the neighborhood to look at Christmas lights. Even though both my parents are Jewish, both of these activities are holiday traditions in our family.

I love being Jewish because there is no right or wrong way to do it. Judaism taught me to question everything and showed me that my identity is a Choose Your Own Adventure book. I don’t consider myself to be a religious person but I’ll always be a Jew. I had a Bat Mitzvah, I questioned everything, I celebrate Chanukah, and I chose my own identity.

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to start working with a Bar and Bat Mitzvah Photographer. Dave at InSync Photography and Design is a wonderful photographer (and person!) and I love photographing Mitzvahs alongside him. While working for Dave, I’ve been able to witness so many young Jews read the torah, question everything, and choose their own adventures. I am so grateful to be able to be a part of these milestones; they have brought me closer to my own Judaism. I’ve decided to share some photos of a few Bar and Bat Mitzvahs that I photographed with InSync Photography and Design, in honor of my favorite Jewish holiday.

StapeltOM Festival Day One | Denver Yoga Photographer

As a Colorado performance and event photographer, I’m not able to experience a show or event in the same way as someone who is participating or watching it would. (That’s why I love getting tickets to the shows I shoot.) I’m okay with this because I’m able to document everyone else’s experiences instead.

After I finished photographing this yoga class at StapeltOM, I overheard someone say that it was a life changing experience. It’s not hard to see why it had such a profound impact on people.

Yoga is a powerful experience, but when you combine that with crisp autumn air, a stunning sunset, a crescent moon, glowing lights, and an inspirational instructor talking directly to you through your own glowing headphones, it becomes so much more.

After the class, instructor Reace Daniel led the group in meditation. With the sound of his guitar and everyone huddled together on stage, it was pure heaven. There was such a feeling of love and community that I’m sure everyone there felt.

My grandmother (I call her Ema, which means mother in Hebrew) is an inspiration to me. When she was 16, she left her whole life behind and came to this country to escape Nazi Germany. She knew no English when she got here and still managed to graduate at the top of her class.
