Opera Singer Leah | Denver Headshot Photography

Leah Podzimek took a really creative approach to her Denver headshot photography. She planned out three different looks, with different outfits, jewelry, hair, and makeup. Each look was based off a character from an opera, some of her favorite roles. It was amazing and totally genius! I recommend all my Denver opera singer and actor headshot clients do this too. When you’re presenting your portfolio for auditions, you want to show the different emotions and roles you can portray. You want to show that you are versatile and creative.

I knew Leah through Opera Colorado where she worked as an arts administrator. When she left that job to start on an exciting new career path, working for Boulder Symphony and Meow Wolf Denver (so cool!), she decided it was time to update her headshots. With her new job flexibility, she was able to attend opera intensive programs and audition more and she needed a new portfolio to do so. Before her session, Leah told me that she wanted to capture the many facets of her personality – joy, laughter, seriousness, intensity, etc, so that is what we set out to do. I wanted to show how creative, versatile, and passionate she is as an arts administrator and a singer.

We did her session in Lodo, which offered us a wide variety of backgrounds and locations. It was so much fun running around the city to all the different spots we had planned. We got a great mix of industrial, urban, and nature all within a few blocks of each other. I know all the great nooks and crannies in the area and I love taking my clients to them! We ended the session with some evening portraits, which was so much fun! I loved getting the chance to play with the city lights and Millenium Bridge was the perfect spot for it.

Electrical Engineer Yazan | Denver Headshot Photography

I love photographing passionate people. While most of my Denver and Boulder headshot clients are artists and entrepreneurs, anyone who is passionate about what they do is a perfect fit for me. I met Yazan at an Energy Storage Expo I was photographing for a colleague of mine, Kinser Studios. It was a huge conference but I ran into him a few times, while he was engaging with vendors, asking questions at seminars, and networking with his colleagues. It was very clear to me that he loves what he does.

Yazan works as an Electrical Engineer for American Electric Power in Columbus. While he was visiting Denver for the expo, he wanted to get some fun photos in the city. His mother’s birthday was coming up and he wanted to gift her a few portraits of himself. Isn’t that so sweet of him!?

We met up after the expo, just outside the Colorado Convention Center. It was cloudy and rainy but that didn’t stop us from having a great portrait session. In fact, the rain really enhanced the color of everything and gave a very cool effect to the photos. Plus, we borrowed some cool umbrellas from the hotel Yazan was staying in and used them as fun props in some of the photos.

The Colorado Convention Center and surrounding areas proved to be a great location. It’s modern and urban. There are lots of trees and plants around for a nature feel as well. And I just love the Big Blue Bear. It’s such an iconic Denver sculpture and it gives the photos a nice pop of color.

I loved working with Yazan and creating these fun portraits together. I know his mother with just love them and I hope his family will cherish them for a long time.

National Dance Day | Denver Dance Photographer

I thought National Dance Day was the perfect day to officially reveal my new dance photography project! It’s called Dance by Design and it’s a collaborative, multi-shoot project involving local dancers, fashion designers, and locations around Denver.

My first shoot for the project was with Paul Morland and RBClassics in LoDo. Paul was born and raised in Denver and is now attending NYU’s Tisch school. RBClassics is a new company that makes loud shorts for bold men.

Kody and Nat | Chicago Dance Photograher

Fun fact: I was born and raised in Chicago. Every time I came back to visit throughout college, I never felt truly home until I went to Millennium Park. I’m moving to Colorado tomorrow but before I moved away for good, I just had to have a photo shoot there.

Kody and I met at Jacob’s Pillow where he was a Contemporary Program participant and I was the Photography Intern. We did a little photo session with Christine while we were there, which was a lot of fun. He lives in Chicago and is a dancer with DanceWorks Chicago so we decided to do a dance photo shoot on our home turf.

He brought his boyfriend Nat, who dances in the Joffrey Studio Company and the three of us had a blast.

Some of my favorite buildings are in the background of the image below and I love how Nat and Kody became part of the skyline for this shot.
